Effective smutty romp

Carol Anderson's "A Private Performance" won't be mistaken for literature, but it's written with panache, sparkle, and a bit of Gothic ambience and makes for a very satisfying read in the erotica genre. Jessica Harper, our sweetly delineated heroine, is a prim schoolmistress shanghaied by an old school-chum, Alice, into lending a hand as costume-girl for some amateur theatricals in a remote manor during the Christmas holiday. Jessica's misgivings are soon confirmed, however, as she realizes that Alice has become a debauchee and is surrounded by self-indulgent friends. Chief among these must be counted the master of Malestone House, Jack Heally, a sort of swaggering Byronic rake sans literary pretensions. Jessica has the fine bad luck of spotting Jack in flagrante delecto and is rooted to the spot by feelings she had thought long dead . . . "A Private Performance" steadily escalates its kink-factor, as the actors and guests indulge in all sorts of hedonistic combinations, sometimes in public view, and Jessica quickly blossoms into a full-blown sensualist whose inhibitions are rapidly deserting her. Things take another turn, however, when a new guest, Henry, arrives and seems determined to take Jessica under his wing. Like Jack, he is bent on transforming the retiring young schoolteacher into a shameless wanton, but Henry has sinister ulterior motives which will force Jack and Alice, whose erotic passion for Jessica is fortified with genuine regard, to attempt to intervene before Jessica stubbornly commits herself to marriage with a true scoundrel. Anderson manipulates her plot-arc with great skill, assuring that element of suspense which lends so much extra frisson to the dramatic eroticism on display. Both the tactile and psychological elements of arousal are described with fineness, and her imagination spills out in a very high number of truly memorable sexcapades. "A Private Performance" doles out a heady mixture of exhibitionism, humiliation, voyeurism, bisexuality and (gasp!) public performance to keep both the reader, and our stunned and stunning heroine, delightfully occupied.
