Great, practical assistance

I was worried that this book was already dated, but it turned out to be one the most useful books I have ever bought. The technical stuff about the cause of the illness was accessible and helpful, and I found updates on other sites anyway. This was not the main point of the book. I have read the book twice and my daughter, who was recently diagnosed, is also working her way through it. The central message of the book has dramatically changed my view of God and his response to my illness. I finally understood how God sees this, and I have been able to use that knowledge to help other people. It has moved my relationship with God from "rule-bound" to "basking-in-grace". Coming to this acceptance has enabled me to deal with the illness much better, with much less stress on my family than during previous episodes. I am playing a far more active role in managing it, and I am finally free of needless guilt and fear. Highly recommended!

Just What I Needed

There's an awful lot of Christians who will blame a sick and suffering person for their illness. If you suffer from depression and find yourself under attack from these 'friends of Job' this book will ease your heart and mind. This book should be required reading for every pastor.

Practical Workbook for the Depressed Christian by John Lockley

This is an excellent book for any Christian to read. It helps free up the reader ( depressed or not) from the damage of the Christians words. It gives knowledge-- while it explains depression, as well as teaches you that a "loving" God does allow these attacks. Depression is not a lack of faith that some worldly people may have to deal with or well known preachers say. Nor is it a selfishness sin out of control as other Christians would say. It shows how other Christians non Bible based words are damaging. It is my opinion that after reading sections of the book that Christians either remain silent on the subject or get knowledge of the Bible and the sickness. This will prevent them from causing more harm, even though their intentions may have been out of kindness. It is a very helpful book. The Practical Workbook for the Depressed Christian is the best book I have read on depression written by a Christian or secular writer.
