This 2017 book is totally revisionist history. Whoever wrote it sanitized the 1962 version beyond belief. They made Joan Crawford sound like Little Miss Sunshine, spreading love and joy all around while having bouquets of flowers strewn at her feet her whole life. According to Joan, she was friends with everyone she ever met, including all of MGM’s stable of stars. She also never had a disagreement or any conflict with anyone. Does that sound like Joan Crawford to you? The ongoing feud with Norma Shearer comes to mind. And then, of course, there was her rival Bette Davis. There is no mention of Joan ever drinking alcohol, even though she was an alcoholic. By the end of this book, she accomplished everything on her own, short of being canonized a saint by the pope. What we don’t know is if she had remorse after writing the 1962 version and then made the cleansing updates herself before her death. If so, this act was Oscar-worthy.
