A Playa’s Life

Setting/Background: A Playa's Life is set in a time span from the late-1960's until the mid-1990's in California. A cultural shift was beginning in America during this time for not only Blacks but also for other races - namely Latinos and Asians. By the early 1970s, the Civil Rights movement had slowed to a "civil cold war," especially in the South. However, whatever racism remained present, it was more subtle out West. That being said, the Smooth family was considered part of a growing number of black, working-class families that had progressed enough to move to the city of Pomona; a suburb of Los Angeles, California. Mr. and Mrs. Smooth were both tall, black, with dark skin, in a stable marriage. They raised 5 children together, and it had become more plausible for them to own a home in the suburbs at this time rather than during the decades prior. The Plot of the story The author, Ivan Hill , gives a first-person account of the story of Daniel James, Jr (DJ) , who provides readers with an intimate view of the characters and a front-row seat to the action as told by the narrator, DJ himself. DJ is the 2nd oldest sibling. He begins his story explaining his decision early in life (elementary school ages) to pursue and conquer God's finest and most complex creation on earth - females , as many as he could handle - exceeding the challenge of romancing them all and, in some cases, even at the same time . He recognized that achieving this goal would require the skill of a Playa' as measured by the extent of his " game ." His mantra is that the better his game as a Playa, the more respect he receives in the community, with his family, schoolmates, coworkers, and conquests. Evidence of this began at a young age, while in grade school; he recognized that becoming an avid bicycle rider and the "music dude" with the boom box was the attention-getting tool to better his game as the Playa of girls . Later in life, he continued this mantra by becoming the sports jock of multiple sports, and an all-around "life of the Party" with women of which he was in constant attendance !
