Jablonski reaches the upper limit of what can be done in one book to describe the Second World War

The Second World War was truly global and there were so many aspects that no one book could possibly do a reasonable job of describing it. However, Jablonski reaches the upper limit of what can be done within these parameters. Using a combination of text and many photos, he is able to capture the essence of that titanic struggle for power and world domination. If you are interested in a primer about the Second World War, this book will fill your needs.

A Pictorial History of the World War II Years

This is a very readable overview of WWII, originally published in 1977. After a chapter entitled "Prelude", each subsequent chapter covers a year of the war, from 1939 to 1945, complete with a map of Europe and another of the Pacific Theater as it existed during that year. There are photographs on nearly every page, and each chapter concludes with 16 pages (8 sheets), more or less, of only photographs for that year. This is not a detailed narrative of the war - and there is no bibliography, nor any mention of other books in the text - but it is an excellent introduction to WWII.
