Fred Markowitz was not a professional photographer in the usual sense. He had a day job in which his photographic interest and skills were valuable and valued but not prerequisite. The photography on which he expended the most time--taking personal snapshots and making fine art photographs--was photography he did on his own time. From 1978 through 1997, his images won almost three dozen awards in at least 48 local or regional juried art shows. Many of those award-winning photographs are reproduced in this 88-page volume, which also includes some of his never shown snapshots and photographs. Fred Markowitz was happy to receive validation from his peers, but, for him, neither making nor exhibiting photographs was about praise or external rewards. He simply loved the medium. He loved the way it lent itself to truth telling or to myth making, to capturing fleeting moments or contemplating timeless truths, to raising public awareness or helping shape personal visions. He studied photography's history, its current directions, and the oeuvre of earlier and contemporary photographers he admired. He explored varied approaches, techniques, avenues of expression. His creativity and sensitivity were intuitive, but he worked at achieving artistry, at the craft of using the medium well. He was a professional in his dedication. The photographs in this book reflect that. "A Passion for Photography" also includes an essay of that title by his wife and fellow visual artist Sheila N Markowitz, his notes for a talk on photography he delivered before a local arts council, and other miscellany.
