Francis Mace was a Lecturer in Music, Verner Bickley was Head of the Department of English. In the brief 'Preface' they declare that the songs will be useful for the class singing lesson at all levels in the Primary School. Most of the melodies are adapted from traditional music: Malay, Egyptian, Indonesian, Chinese, Tamil, Hindustani. In most cases, words and music have been written or adapted by the editors. "A New Malayan Song Book" was first published in 1960.
