Viola Haversham is almost officially a spinster. Having loved with her whole heart years ago and having it broken, Viola refuses to even consider finding someone to love again. She goes through the motions of living her life when in actuality, she is slowly dying inside. Years ago, Viola and Marcus loved each other and were going to be married. However, on the night of their masked engagement ball, Viola found Marcus making love to another woman in the same mask as she was wearing. Fleeing into the night, she refused to listen to Marcus as he tried to explain. When the woman that Marcus was with discovered she was pregnant, Marcus married her although Viola was the one he continued to love. Viola was crushed again months later when Marcus' wife died in childbirth and he escaped to India. She hopes time will heal her wounds but it is not to be. Marcus Kingsley has loved Viola since she was five years old and kicked him out of a tree. Watching her grow up was agony because he knew that he needed to wait for her, and wait he did. When Viola finally turned 18, Marcus was free to pursue her as a potential husband. Unbeknownst to Marcus, there was one plotting to keep the lovers apart. When Marcus saw Viola in the mask he bought for her at their engagement ball, he seduced her. However, it was not Viola at all, but Agnes, the Countess of Weatherington's daughter. Once Marcus realized that he was making love to the wrong woman he was horrified. Viola refused to see him or listen to explanations. Agnes became pregnant, and Marcus did the only thing he could and married her. Sadly, Agnes perished in childbirth, and Marcus ran away to India to lick his wounds. Three years later, he is ready to face his demons and Viola once more and refuses to rest until Viola has forgiven him and becomes his wife. Never before has a book taken me on such an emotional roller coaster as A MOST DANGEROUS AFFAIR has done. Not only was I on a roller coaster, but I had to fight with myself to be on Marcus' side. Very rarely am I sympathetic to a hero who strays, but once the pieces of the puzzle fell into place, I realized that Marcus truly and deeply loved Viola and never meant to break her heart. I can now only fault him for not knowing how Viola kissed and therefore, being able to tell that she was not the woman he was making love to. As for Viola, she has to be the most stubborn heroine I have ever come across; but for good reason. She was devastated by Marcus's betrayal and refuses to be hurt again, ever. Having never read anything penned by Christy Gissendaner, I was unprepared for the intensity of A MOST DANGEROUS AFFAIR. That said, let me be the first to say that this book exceeded expectations and by the end, I can say A MOST DANGEROUS AFFAIR is one of the better books I have read in a long time. The story flowed, the suspense kept you on the edge of your seat, and overcoming adversity, the characters were free to love each other. The making of a truly, good read.
A MOST DANGEROUS AFFAIR

FROM THE BACK COVER: After losing the boy she thought she would love forever, Viola Haversham never wanted to face the man he has become. But now he is back, threatening the wall she has built around her heart. Older and infinitely wiser, Viola vows to never fall under his seductive spell again. Three years after a cruel twist of fate separated them, Marcus Kingsley never forgot the girl he was forced to leave behind. When he returns to England to assume his father's ducal title, Marcus realized that his feelings are just as strong as they ever were. Unfortunately, Viola is determined to reject his every advance. Can he convince her to give him (and love) a second chance? I enjoyed the story I actully read it in one day. The only thing I didn't like was how long Viola stayed mad at Marcus. I will be checking out other books by Christy Gissendaner.
