The murder of a long-time resident of Hawaii and former member of Boston society is the subject of the book. The protagonist is the victim's nephew, a stiff young bond trader from Boston who travelled to the islands in an effort to persuade his aunt Minerva, whose vacation had lasted for many months, to go back to Boston. The nephew, John Quincy Winterslip, is quickly enchanted by the islands, falls in love, breaks off his engagement to his strict Boston fiancee Agatha, and plans to move to San Francisco when the murder is discovered. He is introduced to several facets of Hawaiian life during the intermission and helps Detective Charlie Chan in some ways with the investigation.
