The novel begins by saying that the novelist's mother first gave birth under a tree on a mountain. It is reality, not imagination. That was the time of the Malabar Rebellion. The pregnant woman went to foothills, fearing that village would be attacked if she stayed at home. The novel also explores how the Arabs and Vasco da Gama came here...
