A Longing Fulfilled: My Infertility Journey

When I was 31 years old my husband and I sat across from a reproductive endocrinologist eager to finally hear why we weren't able to conceive and how to fix it. Instead, we were told we had unexplained infertility. We had been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half at this point and had endured multiple invasive tests only to be told to try IUI. After four failed IUIs we were no closer to understanding why we couldn't get pregnant. The only answer our reproductive endocrinologist had was to try IVF. This was the point where we left that fertility clinic never to enter again. Instead, I found a doctor who was as interested in getting to the bottom of my fertility issues as I was. I got diagnosed with endometritis, uterine polyps, and low progesterone. After seeking treatment, I was finally able to conceive and hold my miracle baby in my arms. I didn't know it at the time, but my fertility journey was far from over. I thought I would have an easy time getting pregnant again, only to experience an ectopic pregnancy and two miscarriages. Thankfully, the same doctor was able to help me in my recovery journey and I was able to conceive another miracle rainbow baby after three losses. I've spent six years of my life trying to get and stay pregnant. I've experienced primary infertility, secondary infertility, failed fertility treatments, surgery, ectopic pregnancy, and miscarriage. After all that I have two living children I can put my arms around. I am incredibly grateful for my family and everything I've learned along the journey. While trying to conceive my second child, I was part of an online support group for women who had experienced infertility or pregnancy loss. I responded to many posts and comments, trying to comfort and educate women who were grieving, despairing, and confused. This was part of what inspired me to finally write my story. There are so many women who suffer in silence through infertility, miscarriage, and other trauma. It's time we start sharing our stories and sharing our knowledge. My hope is my story can entertain, inspire, and help you on your journey!
