Book Overview

A lantern flickers against the wind as a young girl slips through the shadowed lanes of colonial Massachusetts, her heart pounding with secrets and dreams. In the hush before revolution, everyday life is threaded with adventure, courage, and the quiet hope of freedom-a world where the fate of a nation is glimpsed through the eyes of one determined child. Set amid the salt-scented air and historic byways of Cape Cod, this children's historical novel draws readers into the vibrant tapestry of colonial New England, blending the innocence of youth with the charged atmosphere of the American Revolution. Through the spirited journey of Anne Nelson, a resourceful heroine whose wit and loyalty shine, the narrative reveals both the peril and promise of a time when even the youngest could shape history. Richly illustrated by Wuanita Smith, the story's pages come alive with scenes of bustling villages, secret messages, and moments of quiet bravery. This is more than a juvenile adventure story; it is a window into the daily rhythms and extraordinary challenges faced by families during a pivotal era. The author's deft touch brings authenticity and warmth to the world of colonial Massachusetts, making the struggles and triumphs of its people immediate and deeply felt. For lovers of young adult historical fiction and those captivated by the nuances of Cape Cod history, this Project Gutenberg edition stands as a bridge between past and present, inviting both discovery and nostalgia. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure, preserving a beloved piece of historical fiction for children and classic-collection buyers alike.
