Isabel is a Cuban-American single mother who, after a series of failed relationships, has fallen hard for a burnt-out Cuban screenwriter. Lucinda is a wealthy Dominican-American socialite whose fears that her banker husband is having an affair threaten to tear her family apart. Mercy, a young Cuban refugee, has worked her way up to become an independent, high-end real estate agent. But when her fiance meets her mother, she finds herself caught between her new world & her family's traditions. Julia, a Mexican-American professor & author, is in a dream relationship. But does she love him enough to follow him to Mexico? As each woman struggles through career & relationship choices, she discovers the importance of identity, culture, friendship, & true love in this fresh, fast-paced debut.
I'm an avid reader who depends on his friends for recommendations, otherwise he (I) would read nothng but the classics. When my old professor, Preston Allen, author of Hoochie Mama, suggests that I read a book, I never know what to expect. Usually he is right on target, as he was when he invited me to a reading by C. C. Medina and encouraged me (made me) purchase their book. It was an excellent read, a page turner that I did not put down until it was finished. There are four women as the main characters, but I will focus on Isabelle and Julia, who, I believe, are the moral center of the novel. Isabelle is funny and profound in her four years of self-imposed celibacy. Julia, on the other hand, has had a man, the perfect man, for quite a long time. Both of these women, despite their opposite plights, are looking for a little love. The way these women find their loves crosses lines of ethnicity, culture, and sexual identity. A great, great read.

To tell the truth this is the only book I have read from front to back. It is by far my favorite, I hope C.C. Medina comes out with other books...I couldn't put this one down, it was fun to read about the lifestyles of other latinas...
A great "novela" for latinas!

Even though I am a teen, I found this book very interesting in the subject of Latin women in the world. C.C. Medina made an interesting point of view making each and everyone of the main characters to have such an interesting life. I will be looking forward to reading Medina's next novel!
A little Spanglish in Miami

I had little expectations for the book, but as I read on I enjoyed it more and more. The characters are pretty realistic and very typical of the new Miami. I am curious though about whether people in Miami use that much Spanglish, because some of it seemed like literal translations of English phrases and thoughts. Pretty good overall, and I will recommend it.
Mucho love and a whole lot of laughs!

This is a funny and roller coaster ride of a story! The four main women have it all-careers, expensive stuff, familia, and friends. They just have lousy luck when it comes to love. So, each in her own way, looks for it. And how and where they find a little love is the interesting and funny theme of the book. It's about four good friends who are in varying stages of a love-life. Some had love and lost it, others are about to lose it, one can't get enough of it, and another is confused by it. Their discoveries make for some interesting reading. Reminds me of the times I've been there myself. And being from Miami, Florida, where most of this story takes place, I can tell you it really gets Miami right-its sense of highstyle, Anglo/Latino culture mix, its sun, sand, beaches, and its starry nights-makes you want to get here, pronto! The four amigas will make you laugh, worry, cry, wonder, and laugh some more! This is a great read for the summer.
