A Life of Leisure: An AI Future

The news networks made the announcement on November 12, 2026. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) had been achieved. The newest AI systems could match or exceed the cognitive abilities of human beings across any task. The media quickly coined the term "The Great Change." In less than a year after introduction, every industry had installed an AI application as part of their office software suite.

With the rapid influx of robots into the workforce, the unemployment rate continued to climb. The unemployment rate did not remain incremental. The summer of 2031 saw the completion of a labor paradigm shift. The unemployment rate was now 25% and seemed to be climbing on a daily basis with no end in sight.

The 2032 Life of Leisure Legislation Act was finally agreed to by congress and signed into law by the president.

Any company that replaced a human worker with a robot would pay a tax. This tax would then be put into a fund that would be used to supply the unemployed with a monthly income, a stipend.
