Whenever I encountered a woman from a very impoverished background-be it someone responsible for cleaning public toilets, or those women who sweep in train compartments and beg with their children tied to their backs, or those collecting plastic litter from the roadside to sell to scrap dealers for a meager income-I always wondered how they would narrate their story. My attempts to imagine their lives led me through so much pain that I found myself unable to write. Consequently, I chose to write a fictional story about a woman who, while still facing hardships, is somewhat better off than the women I described earlier. Please do not expect the conventional character development and narrative arcs in this piece of literary fiction. This is a short book, and I've written it as I imagine a woman from such a background would tell her story-hastily, without a permanent concern for the embellishment of language, offering glimpses of her experiences in short bursts, about to move away from the listener since she has more pressing concerns of her daily life. I hope you understand and like this new approach I have tried.
