"On Luis's couch, Ilich coughs up all his dross, his inventory of defects. There are definite touches of humor and irony in his proposal-asking his poet-psychotherapist's permission to write a novel because he wants to leave poems behind: "No more bunches of light. / No more flowering asterisks. / No more sand suns." Though, later, insisting on the novel's plot and characters, he confesses that what he's after is to make enough money with the novel to publish more poetry, to add to the fourteen chapbooks already printed. The answer that comes from Freud's disciple is conclusive: "None of this prosaic backsliding / None of these lowercase narratives / You're called to be / A love poem ". There's a very serious game going on in this poetry, apparently simple and even jovial, but which captures the depth of human nature. The result is 'On the far shore'."
