A reader, coming across this book, might reasonably wonder why anyone would publish a book of aphorisms written by a contemporary, unknown author. A related question might be: Why publish a collection of new aphorisms when there are dozens of collections of perfectly good older ones? Our answer is that we believe the aphorism--like poetry and the short story--is a valuable literary species that needs to survive. Aphorisms give us different perspectives on age-old ideas. And sometimes those perspectives make the ideas themselves seem new. Without the ongoing publication of new aphorisms by new writers, the species is endangered.
