The story is written from a child's prospective through the eyes of the main character, Allie. Allie starts out in the book living in a very small apartment, sharing her room with her brother. She very much would like to have her own room and a dog. The family is accepted into the Habitat program and begins to help the volunteers build their home. Allie meets a neighbor girl, Jennifer, whose family has just moved into a Habitat home. These girls become quick friends. Jennifer has a dog named Pumpkin and Allie helps build a dog house for her. What Allie doesn't know is that Pumpkin is going to have puppies. During construction, Allie learns a lot about how a house is built and how important teamwork is. At the end of the book, Allies family moves into her family's new house. Allie is very excited to have own room and is surprised when Jennifer's father gives her a puppy of her own. Allie names her new puppy, Wally.
