early ecological tragi-comic novel

First published in 1970, this novel relates the exploits of Harry Craddock, ornithologist in search of the elusive and possibly extinct night parrot in the central Australian outback.It's funny and esoteric and knowledgable - and moves at a hectic pace towards its sardonic conclusion. One of the great Australian novels, in the style of Peter Carey long before Carey was a writer. It won the Miles Franklin Award, Australia's premier literary award, in its year of publication.One of Stivens' early novels, Jimmy Brockett (1951), concerning a boxer who becomes a political heavyweight in the years of the Depression, has just been re-released in Sydney University Press's Classic Australian Works series.
