Well written but biased

I was given this book as a gift because I'm interested in learning about my culture's history. However this book provides little more than a chronological account of the transitions of rulers and nothing about the culture and it's development. Worst still the author asserts Chinese accounts as fact and dismisses the idea of pre modern Vietnamese identity outright. He doesn't even refer to the country with the Vietnamese titles. I wanted to like it but it's not really useful as an actual insight to what the development of the country was like.
