The Igbo people of eastern Nigeria number perhaps ten million (in 1974 when this book was first published) - a population greater than many modern nations. Yet, like other African peoples whose political institutions were small-scale, their history had been curiously neglected by other historians of Africa, who had tended to focus on kingdoms and large unified states. Prof Isichei wrote the first history of the Igno people, in an immensely learned work of great breath which begins in the Stone Age and ends in the 1970s covering a wide variety of themes in social, economic, political, religious and military history. It has been described as a triumph of pioneering scholarship. This sought after book has been out of print for a considerable amount of time and we are pleased that this book will now be accessible to all who have an interest in Igbo history.
