Prince William Sound in review

Jim and Nancy Lethcoe did a good job in laying out the history of Prince William sound from the first known human habitation of early Natives through the exploration of England, Russia and Spain. This helps explain some of the geographic names of this region. The book then goes through the struggles of the Natives as the European and Americans settle in and bring Cash based economies. Here we see the rise and fall of the Salmon fisheries, Copper and Gold mines, Fur trading and finally the Oil Pipeline. All impacted the region Natives and Settlers. Many original Native villages failed and communities like Valdez and Cordova had a Rivalry. Others like Whittier and Chenega struggled to survive. We see ups and down alike through WWI and WWII which led to eventual Statehood and growth of Anchorage which dealt the Sound a severe blow. Then the effects of the 1964 Earth quake and Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. Many family names which adorn many area roads and streets now have faces. As a new resident to this area, this book helped me understand the current people and there reason for being. A great book for those wanting to understand the people and area.
