Book Overview

A History of Aeronautics is a comprehensive book that explores the evolution of aviation from its earliest days to the present. Written by E. Charles Vivian, a noted aviation historian, the book covers a wide range of topics related to the development of flight, including the early experiments with balloons and gliders, the invention of the airplane, and the growth of commercial and military aviation. The book begins with an overview of the early history of flight, including the work of pioneers such as Leonardo da Vinci and the Montgolfier brothers. It then moves on to discuss the development of balloons and airships, and the role they played in early aviation. The invention of the airplane is covered in detail, including the contributions of key figures such as the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss. The book also explores the growth of commercial aviation, including the development of passenger planes and the establishment of airlines. Military aviation is also covered, including the use of airplanes in World War I and World War II. The book concludes with a discussion of the current state of aviation, including the latest advances in technology and the future of flight.Throughout the book, Vivian provides detailed descriptions of the various aircraft and technologies that have shaped the history of aviation. He also includes numerous photographs and illustrations to help readers visualize the planes and other equipment discussed in the text.Overall, A History of Aeronautics is an informative and engaging book that is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in aviation and its history. Two abortive attempts characterised the sixties of last century in France. As regards the first of these, it was carried out by three men, Nadar, Ponton d'Amecourt, and De la Landelle, who conceived the idea of a full-sized helicopter machine. D'Amecourt exhibited a steam model, constructed in 1865, at the Aeronautical Society's Exhibition in 1868. The engine was aluminium with cylinders of bronze, driving two screws placed one above the other and rotating. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
