An old man living alone after losing his wife and remembering his past beginning as a young boy growing up through the Depression while working at his parents restaurant. The story goes through the many trials of his life as he grows to soon into manhood. It takes him through the lose of his grandfather and father while finding love. As World War Two erupts, he is lead to join the fight which brings conflict with the ones he loves. The story proceeds with his wartime experiences which are based on actual wartime events although the characters are fictional. His wartime experiences have their own set of trials until one day he is forced to decide on his own life or the life of others. After surviving his decision, he returns home to the love he left behind. When the old man awakens from the dream of his past, he finds that his daughters have arranged a surprise for him.
