Sought-ever Amber Marie Sterlington has selected a couple of suitors she might like to marry. She is looking for someone with money and a title. Why bother with love? Why would she give Thomas... This description may be from another edition of this product.
I have to admit, I wasn't so sure I was going to like this book at first. At one point, I was sure it wouldn't get more than 3 stars from me, at best. BUT...I am so glad I didn't give up. Wow! What a drastic turnabout in my opinion. Please, do not DNF this book - your persistence will be rewarded!
At the beginning - and to be honest, at least half - of this novel, the FMC, Amber Sterlington, is a conceited, selfish, manipulative shrew. I hated her! I didn't feel much connection with the MMC, Thomas Richards, either, but there was also a lot less focus on his character, so that is somewhat understandable. I had to remind myself that I hate Scarlett O'hara, too, but still love Gone With the Wind. There was juuust enough of a hint as to why she was the way she was to allow me to give her some grace and understanding.
I was blown away by the circumstance that led to Amber's exile to the wilds of Yorkshire. I can guarantee I have never in my life read a book that chose this "scandal," and it was amazingly done. I appreciated so many things about this book and Amber's character development. I love that this wasn't just an embarrassing event that could eventually be forgotten, nor was it something temporary that she could just ride out. She had to come to terms with it and learn how to live with it and the changes it would mean for her future. I appreciate the effort the author put into showing Amber's gradual shift and that she didn't try to rush through it or just describe some magical, overnight, 180° change in Amber's character. It was 100% believable, and now I love her. The reader gets to see the details of how Amber learns from her past mistakes, grows, and changes to become a better person over time. This was masterfully done, and this will be one of those stories that stays with me for some time.
Edited to add: How could I forget to mention Suzanne! What a diamond. From Amber's reluctant servant to her encourager, and eventually to a true friend. ❤️
(I still would like to push Amber's parents into the mud. They're horrid.)

I loved this book, and found myself looking forward each night to reading a little while before bed. This "Proper Romance" series is not a racy book filled with too much inappropriate behavior by young women. It is written with sincerity, honesty and you began to get to know each character just like you're making a friend. The love story develops and unfolds in a timely manner, and there are also many lessons about life that keep us reminded about what is important, the simple things. Something drastic happens in this story, and it takes a little time for life to even out. I would recommend this book to any woman who is just wanting to soak up old-fashioned romance and a real story that keeps you captivated. It started out a little slow initially, but then truly picked up the pace and every evening I was entranced in it. Thank you Josi S. Kilpack!
