When Penny Powers, a spunky author in her late thirties, moves from Manhattan to the picturesque New England village of Ripplestone, she is hoping to start a new chapter in her life: one of peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, although she has made some new friends, her plan goes awry when one of them is murdered on the night of the annual May Day festival. Although a prime suspect is apprehended by the police, Penny's new friends believe he is innocent. Penny, now doubtful and discouraged, must decide whether to join them in their search for the real killer, or to give up on the country and return to the city. With a little encouragement and two dogs by her side, Penny chooses to give Ripplestone a chance and ends up meeting many of its quirky inhabitants, discovers an intriguing artifact hidden in her Victorian house and even sparks a romantic interest (or two).
