THIS IS NOT A BOOK BY JONATHAN ESCOFFERY, NOR IS IT AFFILIATED WITH HIM. IT IS AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION WRITTEN TO OFFER AN INSIGHT ON THE ORIGINAL BOOK. ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK "If I Survive You" is an eight-story mosaic showing the efforts of a Jamaican family to build their life in America. "In Flux," the excellent opening narrative, begins with a question that the protagonists never really shake: "What Are You?" Trelawny is presently in fifth grade in Miami. The youngsters take sides and want to know who he is. Is he black? Is he from Spain? He is asked in which language his mother is fluent. It has an unusual accent. She tells him he's a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but it's not the one-word response people want. His brother Delano informs him they are black in America, not Jamaica. His mother urges him not to bring any "nappy-headed" female around, and please, for God's sake, do not bring home a white girl. The Jamaican youth do not see him as legitimate since he is not in sync with their culture or heritage. His lack of identity to bond with would distort his self-image throughout his life. The remaining seven family stories are recounted from various perspectives-Trelawny and Delano, who have entirely different personality types, each battle in their manner to achieve. To establish a better life, they fight with one another and their father. This is Jonathan Escoffery's debut novel, and it is excellent. The story moves along with a great blend of comedy, sympathy, and grief, giving the impression that these are genuine people's lives. A good beginning like this bodes well for the future.
