A good overview

This is a pretty good overview of EU law. Frequent citations make it easy to follow up and go into some subjects in greater depth. There were a few things that I thought were covered a bit too shallow, such as the Francovich liability and legal tests for direct effect. Otherwise, pretty comprehensive. Note: there is a revised and newer version out: A Guide to European Union Law.
