Amber Joy Douglas, a smart, pretty girl with honey-colored eyes, is about to start her senior year soon. Unlike her friends, however, she hasn't the foggiest idea of what to do after graduation. Secretly, she wants to get married and have kids, but she doesn't even have a boyfriend and there's nobody in town who "floats her boat." Her guidance counselor has great expectations for her, though. She believes that Amber will have her choice of many colleges that are seeking bright minority students of her caliber. She assures Amber that God is at work behind the scenes paving her future. Amber loves the Lord and is committed to trust Him with His plans for her. One evening a harrowing experience lands Amber into the arms of her big brother's best friend, Tyler Ferguson, a Marine home on leave from Vietnam. For the past three summers, Amber and Ty have managed to miss each other. She's been out of town with a youth mission group when he comes home. Ty invites Amber for a Coke so the two of them can catch up with what's been going on in their lives. They hit it off and agree to play tennis every morning and group-date at night. Before long, Amber and Ty realize their affection for each other has grown deep. Is it love? Ty has beat the odds so far, but the life expectancy of a combat Marine in Vietnam is thirty days. Would it be wise to make promises they may not be able to keep? Now what is she supposed to do? Back to square one.
