In 1896 the Government built a lighthouse and dwelling on Plum Island. Martin Knudsen was appointed head keeper, and moved his family over there. Three years later he was transferred to Racine, Wisconsin, as keeper of the Racine Pier Head Light. In 1917 he moved to his last lighthouse position, at the North Point Lighthouse in Lake Park, Milwaukee. He retired in June 1924, when he had reached his seventieth year, and lived a happy, active life until he had attained the ripe age of eighty-nine. His death was due primarily to a fractured hip, caused by a fall in his room. He died July 26, 1943.
