A Gift from the Future to the Leisure Village Writers

A Gift from the Future to the Leisure Village Writers is a result of Martha Brabant Pritchard's A Gift to the Future from the Leisure Village Writers, a compilation of personal stories written by the Leisure Village writer's group. My fourth grade class interviewed some of Pritchard's featured authors and wrote up their own stories. The experience gave my students an authentic writing situation addressing several of the standards required under our language arts curriculum. A bridge was formed from the elders to the youth, and it is hoped that bridge will form from these youth as they grow older to their next generation. Children's engagement and enthusiasm make things happen. Such was the case for this project. In an age where technology can be all-consuming and overwhelming, we need to afford opportunities such as this project to our young people, a critical piece of their molding as human beings that is fast disappearing. Because of this project, we made lots of friends, and many lives have been enriched through the friendships and the stories shared.
