This is the story of Wendy and her family who live in the fictional Derbyshire village of Bradthorpe during the Second World War. It's based on the real-life experience of the author and was written in part to atone for the awful things she did to the little evacuee who came to live with her family for nine months or so, and which have haunted her for many years. We grew up listening to these stories, and hope that you enjoy them - and are appalled by them - too. There are a lot of old-fashioned words, idioms and wartime references, and quite a bit of Derbyshire dialect - not to mention some colourful East End language. We have tried to explain many of these as the story unfolds. Names of people and places have been changed to protect the innocent... and the guilty.
