Adam M. Dean is a West Virginia attorney and an individual with disability. He went to Beijing and Shanghai, China, in 2002 as a part of a cultural exchange. As much as Adam enjoyed visiting China, he wished at least one of his two best friends could have joined him on the trip. Inspired by that wish, Adam wrote a book to celebrate friendship: "This book was originally published in 2008 under the title The Gate of Heavenly Peace . . . and Other Stories. But, people who read the book said it was a short novel. Upon reflection, I believe that they were right. I also changed the title of the book to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Shanghai Hilton because it is the first chapter that most represents what the novel is about. The book opens to two best friends, Adam Chapman and Eddie North, lost on a dark night in the great metropolis that is China's financial capital. The humor doesn't stop there."
