Theological Primer

This book provides an excellent introduction to the theological foundations of contemporary American evangelicalism. Many (most?) evangelicals today are ignorant of their theological heritage. This is not surprising given the rise of non-denominational and inter-denominational churches over the last 50 years. These churches are not based solely on the Bible, but consciously or not reflect historical theological influences of American evangelicalism. Phillips and Okholm describe the significant effects of Luther, Calvin, Anabaptism and others. They also consider evangelicalism in light of the shift to a post-Christian America. This book is must reading for intellectually minded readers interested in the theological bases of American protestantism.
