A Family for Christmas

"Is there a problem officer or are you here to take away their appetite?""You can't be their guardian? Please tell me it isn't so. This would be an even bigger mess if that were true. Who are you...? Exactly..." Cooper had to try to hold his temper. This woman was hot! Sexy hot, pretty hot... and she was mad hot! His stomach rolled at the truth staring at him so incensed. He had an urge to laugh all of a sudden. But that was so irrational he took his time examining her pretty face and length of dark braided hair. At any other time he would have enjoyed the flush on her smooth cheeks, the full well shaped mouth, and a noticeably enticing body. Now her attributes were only another complication. Her dry sarcasm glossed over him as he stared."Guardian! As accused. Please tell me you know the meaning of the word discretion."Whitney could have roasted him and spread his ashes on the top of Mt. Schweitzer. She glanced at the three kids nervously watching them and back at tactless Tim. She looked at him carefully for a minute as he stood absolutely still eyeing her like the original Ebola virus. He was something under six feet but the hat made him seem taller and the uniform made him seem far more intelligent than he had proven to be so far. His eyes bored into hers and she could feel his stiffness become contagious. She thought she would explode holding in the scolding she wanted to give Deputy Dog Armstrong."Maybe we could talk... outside? I think we both need to watch what we say. I am a friend of Ruth."He caught back another whim to laugh. She was not a bit impressed with him. But he was sure there was enough femininity there to cause him more than a few sleepless nights. He couldn't laugh. She'd kill him. Thankfully she spoke to the kids and headed to the door. It was not Deputy Armstrong that followed that small waist and those long legs. No, it was a very fascinated man trying to curb a few reckless impulses."Where is Ruth?" Whitney turned and attacked."She uh, had an accident this morning. She fell and cut her leg. She is out of surgery but still groggy. So it will be a couple of days before I think the kids should see her." Cooper felt proud he could keep two thoughts together as a few stray wisps of hair floated around her hostile face. He sure wanted to smooth them back behind those delicate ears. And he was so busy contemplating his chances that he found he was now being dazzled by a beautiful smile. It took him a minute to register she was pretty pleased with his information about Ruth. But maybe she finally realized he was captivated and was pleased about that. He had to check on his chances again."You uh, seem... pleased with this news. About Ruth... and her accident?"Pleased? No, I am sorry she was hurt but..."Reality hit Cooper right between his starry eyes. "But what you cold La La Land lunatic? I must need my head examined. For a minute there I thought you had a heart. Not a chunk of ice in that... that... never mind. Ruth would like you to stay at her place, with the children. And I'd like to make you do it!"
