Book Overview

Cato is the only true half-human, half-ghost hybrid in existence. He's powerful and unique with two divine powers instead of one.

The United States government believes he is the key to developing a devastating weapon that will give humankind an advantage when war inevitably erupts between the Human Realm and Avil sor, the Ghost Realm.

After being an unwilling test subject in Project Alpha for two years, Cato and the rest of his "lab-family" survive a transport accident to find themselves stranded and powerless in the middle of the wilderness. Hunted every step of the way by ghostly Shadow Guards with supernatural abilities and human Agents desperate to recapture their prisoners, the eight young fugitives are drawn to Cato's hometown where the Rip between Realms connects the worlds.

Cato wants nothing to do with his past, but as his enemies close in, he realizes he's willing to do anything to protect his lab-family . . .

. . . even kidnap the daughter of a ghost hunter and make a dangerous deal to become a mercenary.

My new favorite indie book series!!

(First paragraph is a summary.) After an accident during a prisoner transport, Cato, the only half-human half-ghost hybrid in existence, and his lab-family escape the confines of their cages. Their powers neutralized, and on the run from both the US government and higher-ups in the ghost realm. The governmental lab had tortured him and his lab-family, all under the disguise of building a weapon to protect humans against Kálos (ghosts) as a war builds between the interdimensional races. While the motives of the Shadow Guard sent from the ghost realm to hunt our young fugitives are unknown, but it could be linked to Cato's unique dual Divinity power; he'd be an invaluable asset in the war since ghosts are only known to have one Divinity. Will they be able to get their powers back, be able to survive and protect one another, or will the plan the family of ghosts - bound by circumstances and not blood - made to save the lives of part of their family backfire when they kidnap the daughter of a ghost hunter? Oh my wow! First, let me say the not-so-positives so I can gush about everything I loved in this book. While everything evened out later in the book, there was a lot of point of view from different characters that was a little jumpy and seemingly non-purposeful. However, each point of view was needed and, at times, welcomed to know where loyalties and secrets lie. It was also quite fun to see the same scene followed through from different characters perspectives. Hopefully this will be portrayed a bit better next volumes of the Chronicles of Avilésor series, but I felt like Ash, (one of two girls in the lab-family, the other being Kit, a six-ish year-old,) was there as a token female character without much oomph put behind her. She took on the majority of the care giving role of the group and seemed more frightened of their situations then the rest. While I believe she is a strong character, she just didn't get a chance to prove it well in this book, I'm particularly looking forward to seeing more of her in her element. Now, ohmygosh! Yes! The story took twists and turns to where I totally did not expect, and I'm still wondering how Cato and co. pulled off some of the stuff they did! The writing pulls you in to where you feel like you are right next to the characters, feeling the sun on your face for the first time or the rain gently hit your body as the water soaks you to the bone. I want to learn more about Kalos and the various other supernatural beings that inhabit this world, how their powers work, the Ghost Realm and its inhabitants, and last but certainly at least, more about the beautiful found family of escapees. We only seen a touch of their powers in the first book, these kids and many of the other characters are people I'd very much like to get to know. I am kicking myself for not getting the other two books out so far in the series when I saw the author at Regioncon 2024. And I loved the personal touch of the envelope that you can only open after you finish the book, that was such a nice surprise and a really good incentive to pick up a book - this book - over my phone. If you like action, twist and turns, mysteries, all with heart and struggles, and a supernatural flare, then definitely pick up A Fallen Hero, I cannot recommend it enough!
