Oklahoma, 1939 - For Roop and Dilly, and Mama and Pa, life in a rural farm is more than hard. It is close to impossible. A lot of people have done already left. Packed their bags and moved to Californee...But not all of them make it. For those left behind there are the dust storms, the shifting dirt that covers everything and makes the world look like you are in the middle of some Sahara desert. You make do. You get up before dawn, just like you always do. You grab a bite and then get out and check the live stock, check the creek to make sure the storm hasn't dumped a ton of dirt in it and now there's no more creek. You live everyday, hanging on to what hope you can stir up. Get into town when you can, to get supplies, but you have about two plug nickels you can rub together. Where is the rest going to come from ? Maybe you can sell a cow, and eat for another week? But who's got money? Who's going to buy your cow? Then someone tells you the WPA has come in. What's the WPA? They're government guys, they done set up an office and their giving away jobs. Can you believe that? Maybe... maybe. Could be, that things are maybe getting ready to turn around. You're almost afraid to believe in it. It would be nice to believe in it.- This is a story about a Christmas in that time, and what it was like.
