A Dialogue Of One

Warren Hastings, First Governor-General of India (1774-1785), who was responsible for establishing the system of British Government in India, which eventually came to be known as the Raj, is one of the most enigmatic, and probably one of the most misunderstood, men of his era. He expressed a profound love of the truth, and a constant, deeply passionate love for his wife Marian, which is vividly portrayed in some of the most beautiful love letters to her during the times when they were separated from each other.Following his death in 1818, his wife, who is reported to be of French Huguenot/German origin, is said to have burnt her letters to him, on the supposition that she did not wish to expose herself to ridicule, after her death, on discovery of the fact that her English was poor. It is quite probable, however, that her letters to him were passionate and revealing, since we have it on her husband's authority that she was truthful to a fault.Despite the historical incidents, A Dialogue of One concentrates on the extraordinary love that Warren and Marian expressed for each other.
