As a playpen symbolizes a threat to her off-color life, Mama Vaseline tries to dominate her yet unborn child. Loose and lusty, Mama is caught now between the pleasures of dissolution and the newness of maternal instincts. Didey is by turns menacing, curious and more than a little panicked by the world to come, yet is desperate to experience the terror of freedom. For all her tough talk, we see Mama as pretty much the same. The struggle for freedom, power and love plays out against the inescapable realization that, for both mother and child, life after birth is a major game changer. Ilsa Gilbert's always-poetic language is informed here by probing wit and tougher sensibilities, but then, she is portraying life as a microcosm. It's tough out there, and as Didey might add, "In here, too, Mama." Originally presented at The Old Reliable Theatre Tavern, A Dialogue Between Didey Warbucks And Mama Vaseline was included by Peculiar Works Projects in their homage to Off-Off-Broadway of the 1960's and 70's, calling it an "absolutely unforgettable experience."
