A Developed But Unstable Empire

During the reign of Akbar, the Mughal Empire expanded to include the whole subcontinent and he made it his viceroy: 'The four corners of India are surrounded by sea on three sides'. A brand new one ordered by Akbar. - He sent armies to conquer neighboring states in all directions. However, Akbar did not make significant military advance south against the still powerful rulers of Deccan.
Thus, at the time of Akbar's death, the Mughal Empire was well established and extensive, but still faced instability in its structure and environment.
The next three chapters (included in Part III) examine three different periods of empire expansion and purification under successive emperors, namely: Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Alamgir (known by their royal name Aurangzeb).
۔ Each, while a prince, impatiently prepares to ascend to his father's throne, then escapes a bloody contest with his brothers and other male relatives to seize it. Each new emperor and his supporters later built on the institutions and methods of Akbar's long reign, which expanded and deepened the empire.
Each also developed its own unique culture and ideology. The first two emperors, in particular, preserved the empire's most extensive and sophisticated artistic and architectural achievements.
