Returning to my squad from a month of medical convalescence should have been a welcome homecoming, but a chance run in with a colourful Texas Ranger, my decuria leader, and a bottle of whisky changed that forever. Instead, I was riding shotgun on an ice road, minding United Nation lorries full of rations, and nursing the greatest hangover since Y2K. It was the kind of easy work that should have kept me out of trouble, but an ambush by a gang of Samsara's most infamous raiders made a terrible day so much worse. Kneeling before a hole in the ice and my life down to its final moments, I met Samsara's most legendary cutthroat, Lejaub, better know to all as the Bone Witch.

I lived through the weeks that followed, but just barely. The horror and slaughter would mark me forever, and I will never forget the words purred into my ear with a knife pressed to my throat.
