A must read for new parents

I met the author at a book review and he is a true delight. He gives a first person account of what it was like to treat childhood diseases before we had "miracle drugs", vaccines, simple machines like incubators. He introduces you to the simple people who found the answers- many of them parents of children who had the diseases. I realized that the person I should give this book to was my daughter who had just had a baby. It is a short book and a very easy read. Not all people will agree with his suggestions, but he has a powerful message nonetheless. He stands up for the rights of children. And they are our future.

A Community of Healers

What a beautiful book! I did not put it down till I was finished. As the mother of two, one of which had early health issues, I feel this should be a required reading for every health care provider. Being a good doctor is important, being a compassionate doctor sets you apart and makes you a true healer. Dr James is obviously a true healer. I bought several copies and passed them out to my pediatrician, two friends in pediatric occupational therapy and several girl friends with young children, they were all touched. A great read for anyone with children.

To be a children's advocate...

Though I knew some of Dr James's story, it is a compelling one that will bring tears to the eyes of a reader. Indeed anyone who works with children will be thankful for his presence in the lives of so many families in the past 50 plus years. From his beginning roots as a physician during the 1955 polio epidemic, to the early use of penicillin, he catologs his observations with sensitivity. He shares with the reader his experiences with children with genetic disorders; infectious diseases and developmental disabilities. We share a passion for newborn screening and his efforts in this arena have been life-changing for numerous families. His description of parental advocacy is illuminating. He leaves us to ponder critical questions about children's rights. I recommend this book to all who see themselves as advocates for children.

A unique life journey

This book has captured the compassion, knowledge, and skill that guided Dr. James's life as a doctor. It is an excellent insight into the career of a physician who had great caring for those who came to him for help. I was fascinated by the many twists and turns that his pathway through his career took him. Dr. James is truly a hero of mine.
