A Collector's Comprehensive Guide to Madame Alexander International Dolls

A Collector's Comprehensive Guide to Madame Alexander International DollsOVERVIEW: This volume is dedicated to the 8-inch Alexander-kin dolls that portrayed everyday inhabitants of sixty-three foreign countries in their distinctive regional and/or national dress. They were manufactured in Harlem, New York by the Alexander Doll Company - the last bastion of the "Made in U.S.A." doll - from 1961 to 1990. AUDIENCE: The manual is a broad reference for dealers and collectors of Madame Alexander International Dolls. This is the only book published that contains all of the dolls in this particular collection from inception through 1990. CONTENTS: Part 1 is a short history outlining doll and toy manufacturing in the United States up to 1923 and the Alexander Doll Company from that year through 1990. Part 2 is a photographic survey (in 87 color photographs) of the Alexander-kins' physiognomy, physique and construction from 1961 through 1990. Part 3 dissects the costumes and provides 206 color photographic images of the cloth identification tags, decorative trim, jewelry, handheld accessories, footwear, hand tags, and box labels with notations of the years they were used and when changes were made. Part 4 features, in alphabetical country/region order, a full page photo and written description of each first edition doll, plus a photograph of the associated costume elements: undergarments, shoes, hand accessories, jewelry, etc. There are additional pictures of selected dolls for each country/region (except those that were produced for short periods) showing the costume changes and revisions from introduction to retirement or through 1990. Modifications to the costume, when applicable, are noted in the captions. There are 352 color photographs in this section. Also included are informational factoids about the dolls' costumes and the countries they represent, a Price Guide, Guidelines for Care, and Terms for Rating a Doll's Condition.
