A Civic Revolution: Modern Municipal Government & its Establishment at Ballarat 1855-1857

By Graeme Stephen Cartledge

This book shows how democratic municipal government became an important foundational and integrative initiative for the modern state. It shows how this became a necessary social and political innovation on the Victorian goldfields in the nineteenth century, telling the remarkable story of how the first elected councilors established modern administrative systems and infrastructure, bringing order and progress to a community emerging from the tyranny of the Goldfields Commission and the turmoil of the Eureka rebellion.
