A Child's Garden of Verses is a book of poetry for children. The collection includes some of Stevenson's most famous poems, including "The Land of Counterpane," "My Shadow and "The Lamplighter." Many of the poems describe children's imaginative lives. In "Pirate Story," the garden becomes the setting for a pirate adventure. "The Land of Nod" describes the dreamland children can only visit when asleep. Some poems, particularly those in "The Child Alone," evoke the loneliness of being young, ill, and without companions. In these poems, children use their imaginations to entertain themselves rather than the company of a friend. Poems in the "Garden Days" section of the collection reflect on nature and the seasons. Other poems in the book are moral reminders to children. For example, "Good and Bad Children" warns that misbehaving children will be disliked as adults. The "Envoys" section of poetry consists of poems dedicated to Stevenson's friends and family, particularly those he spent time with at Colinton Manse when he was a child. His experiences at the manse playing in the garden inspired many of the poems in the collection. In the last collection poem, "To Any Reader," Stevenson reminds his readers that all children eventually grow up and that these poems are memories of a past time. This poem also shows that A Child's Garden of Verses is not just a book for children but addresses adult themes like loss and loneliness.
The illustrations are bright and engaging, complementing the poems nicely. My 4 yo and 2 yo love this book!
Poetry and Art that kids enjoy

The lyrical rhymes and magic of everyday kid's lives is captivating for even young children. I grew up listening to these poems and my kids have enjoyed them, too. I am particularly fond of the illustrations by Eloise Wilkin. She captures the realism of both landscape and children's faces. This is a timeless classic.

I read this 30 years ago

Thirty years ago, I was taught to read with this. Different pictures, same poems. I learned to imagine and believe in ordinary, yet beautiful things. Even today, in my own writing, I smile realizing how and when I learned a technique ... just by listening to my mother whisper these poems nightly. Aptly named, RLS has the reader remembering the wonderful days of playing alone and with friends, of delighting in the moment. Your child will gain an understanding of classic children's poetry, of the rhythm and rhyme. They sound eloquent aloud, and read gentle at bedtime. Anthony Trendl editor, HungarianBookstore.com
