Book Overview

Scottish novelist, poet and essayist Robert Louis Stevenson dedicated A Child's Garden of Verses to Alison Cunningham, the nurse of his early childhood years in Edinburgh--a time whose essence he strove to recapture in the sixty-four poems of this long-treasured collection. Here, in "The Land of Counterpane" and "The Land of Nod," and in such delightful lyrics as "My Bed Is a Boat," "Autumn Fires" and "Windy Nights," are rhymes and images children and their parents have cherished together since A Child's Garden of Verses was first published in 1885. Alternately humorous and whimsical, grave and fearful, courageous and determined, the poems touchingly voice the many moods and currents of a child's imaginings. All sixty-four poems are reprinted in this edition in large, easy-to-read type. New illustrations by Thea Kliros capture the magical spirit of this beloved classic of children's literature.

A Child’s Garden of Verses

Another childhood favorite, that has been added to my collection.

Oh my!

One of my favorite books! A joy and a comfort!

Delightful edition

The illustrations are bright and engaging, complementing the poems nicely. My 4 yo and 2 yo love this book!

Poetry and Art that kids enjoy

The lyrical rhymes and magic of everyday kid's lives is captivating for even young children. I grew up listening to these poems and my kids have enjoyed them, too. I am particularly fond of the illustrations by Eloise Wilkin. She captures the realism of both landscape and children's faces. This is a timeless classic.

You cannot go wrong!!!

This book is pure magic. The Provensons' beautiful artwork has been etched onto my brain from early childhood. Stevenson's beautiful verses coupled with the delightful illustrations make this book truly magical. You will love this book!!!!

I read this 30 years ago

Thirty years ago, I was taught to read with this. Different pictures, same poems. I learned to imagine and believe in ordinary, yet beautiful things. Even today, in my own writing, I smile realizing how and when I learned a technique ... just by listening to my mother whisper these poems nightly. Aptly named, RLS has the reader remembering the wonderful days of playing alone and with friends, of delighting in the moment. Your child will gain an understanding of classic children's poetry, of the rhythm and rhyme. They sound eloquent aloud, and read gentle at bedtime. Anthony Trendl editor, HungarianBookstore.com
