A Child of Basse Valley

Dina Baker finds an obsession with existentialism as a result from growing up in the presence of Death in the peculiar small town of Basse Valley. The children there are surrounded by a bleak and dirty atmosphere. Basse Valley is characterized by its dusty warehouses and cracked pavements. It is a place where the frivolous youth are largely unattended and uncared for.
The novella opens moments following Dina's mother's death. Dina's father, or Father as she calls him, has set her aside to talk about the effect of her mother's death, but at that time these ideas are incomprehensible to Dina, and her mother's death creates an obsession with mortality lasting through her life. A friend of Father's and a life mentor, Adonis, guides a young Dina to find her own journey through thought and the changing of perspective, complicating her relationship with the character of Death.
Years following her mother's death, Dina and her childhood friends, Kyle and Erin, have been given the responsibility of organizing the annual music festival of Basse Valley's youth: FortMaul. In it they discover each other to be deeply flawed and dysfunctional people. Kyle Perry: living with his single, drunk father, finds his individuality through danger and acts of confidence, but finds trouble when his actions have adult consequences, reshaping the lives around him forever. Erin Delores: always away from home, lives quietly and masks her insecurities with satire and aggression, and her controlling personality fuels Dina and Kyle to take life altering risks.
Follow Dina through her pursuit of happiness and understanding. In this grim novella, the ideas of community and life are explored along side mortality. Chase the answers through Dina's unstable environments, and find how much you can know.
