A Campus Death Cass Costello is a feisty investigative reporter subsisting on coffee and peanut butter sandwiches. She's covering the murder of a promising student at the University of Iowa, and she's not afraid to bend the rules, or cross the line. Set in Iowa City during the turbulent 1970s, author Mary Anne Madden strikes just the right tone. Using her first-hand knowledge of this famed liberal arts college, she creates an authentic and haunted atmosphere. Cass Costello lives on Summit Street in an old Victorian house across from the Gamma Sorority. It is after midnight and Cass can't sleep. Madden writes, "Tonight, thoughts were tumbling around in her head like wet clothes in a dryer. Cass got up, lit a cigarette and stared out her bedroom window." Note pad in hand, Costello pursues the campus case, as she weaves through dorm rooms, hospitals, taverns, foot bridges, and back streets. Cass is sharp and funny, and she doesn't like to mess up her good gin with "anything but an olive". Madden lines up a complex cast of characters.
