'A Calabrian Folly'is a sequel; I could just as well have called it Part II of 'The Watson Conundrum' although Peter Watson hardly gets a mention. A Calabrian Folly stands alone quite successfully. The chronological plot begins where the previous novel ends and there are many cross-references to the events that have brought the story to any particular point. You can read and enjoy A Calabrian Folly without having read The Watson Conundrum although it is usually better to start a story at its beginning. This novel takes the reader to the beautiful coast and mountains of Calabria. This is the territory of the 'Ndrangheta, the Calabrian Mafia. The plot moves from the UK to Calabria and follows the antics of three ordinary London police officers transported to the unfamiliar environment dominated by Mafia Dons and lesser gangsters. The reader will be introduced to colourful characters and incompetent and corrupt politicians in London and Italy. The Mafia is by its nature violent but the Dons and others you will meet in this novel are mostly a civilised bunch who use violence only when they have good reason to do so.
