Mercy Hill, Missouri, 1978. Involuntary farm auctions have become commonplace, all too often leaving families impoverished and broken. Eighteen-year-old Quick Fairchild, an Upper Midwest Golden Gloves champion, has a plan: He hops a Greyhound to Los Angeles with the noble idea of turning pro, becoming rich and famous and "saving the family farm." Along the way, he gets sidetracked by an unruly wino, a curmudgeonly gold miner, and a moody aspiring actress. Once in L.A., he encounters unexpected turbulence in an array of imperfect humankind: fighters, trainers, managers, gamblers, Hollywood hustlers, barstool philosophers---all mixed within uncontrollable events. As a backdrop to this story hangs the dangerous, often darkly humorous world of professional boxing.
